Voluntary Deep Inspiration Breath-Hold for Breast Cancer: An evaluation of the Respire resources to improve consistency of breath-hold and patient experience.

My MSc dissertation project evaluating the Respire resources in helping to prepare patients to hold their breath  for radiotherapy treatment in patients requiring radiotherapy to the breast/chest wall and regional nodes. The particular focus was on those receiving more complex radiotherapy such as intensity modulated arc therapy whereby a reproducible and consistent breath-hold is key when delivering highly conformal and complex radiotherapy.

The full evaluation will be available soon.
Voluntary Deep Inspiration Breath-hold resources
Introducing a light-based system to aid voluntary deep inspiration breath hold for non-English speaking and hearing impaired individuals.

Voluntary deep inspiration breath-hold is frequently used in practice for its cardiac-sparing capabilities. This method involves simple commands to direct patients into a breath-hold during radiotherapy. Commands are primarily in English unless centres have multi-lingual staff who can translate these commands. Furthermore, most centres do not have visual aids to help those with hearing impairments unable to follow acoustic commands. This highlights a fundamental issue with inclusivity and can impact the equity of this technique to all. Therefore a more inclusive light-based technique may provide this inclusiveness.
